They Say Breathe

They say breathe…

But perhaps in times like this
all you can do is pant or wheeze or gasp—
...What if you close your eyes.

Put your right hand on your heart,  your left hand on your stomach
...Your life is even deeper than your breath.
Think what makes your heart smile.

Joy does not erase fear or sorrow.
But remember what it feels like—

Joy—clear and sweet, real and true
Joy in music, in connection, in laughter, in nature, in movement…
Joy—fierce, loving, kind

We are with you
breathing with you
shallow or deep

Remember this with your smiling heart

Dance, even if you’re broken open.
Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off.
Dance in the middle of the fighting.
Dance in your blood.
Dance when you’re perfectly free.
